Understanding Sendong: A DENR Assessment of the CDO River Basin

sendong_CDORB_2

Read the DENR reports on the Cagayan de Oro River Basin here: sendong_CDORB_2. It contains assessments and recommendations from as early as 2009. The latest flooding that occurred in 2011 were also assessed.

Here is a clear map of the watersheds and tributaries of the Cagayan de Oro river. Learn about the 8 sub-watersheds, their locations, and the existing timberlands within these watersheds. Find out which areas are protected areas.  Then take a look at the map which shows the track of tropical storm Sendong. Next, read the list of flood-affected areas in Cagayan de Oro and the various reports and actions taken by DENR.

The file also shows the provision of geo-hazard assessment report and maps to all LGUs. It has recommendations and action plans, and a number of photos showing flooded areas with their locations and time of flooding. Advisories have been issued. Check them out yourself.

Peruse through the maps, photos, and documents. Inform yourself about what is happening. Let us not let another Sendong tragedy happen, ever again.

Leptospirosis — Outbreak Control Through Information

Leptospirosis Flipchart

The rise in Leptospirosis cases is alarming. Even those who were not exposed to floodwaters, but who were kind enough to help with the cleanup operations after the Sendong disaster have been affected. The hospitals are full. People are sick and dying.

This rough outline of a Leptospirosis flipchart is a project of Balai Global as a way to help with the Dep-ed efforts at educating our children on the dangers of the Leptospira bacteria. It contains information on the disease, on how we can get infected, on the symptoms to look for, on what to do to prevent and treat the sickness. It is written and designed to be child-friendly,specifically for educating affected students under Dep-ed’s care.

The flipchart is printed on sturdy tarp material and sized in a convenient 2×3 layout for easy use by teachers in the various schools in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro that were affected by the flood.

Finally, the flipchart contains the hotline numbers to call in case you need help:

Help Rescue: 411

Landline: 72411

Globe: 0917-7040-411

Smart: 0999-9990-411

What’s New With Sendong? Leptospirosis Outbreak and What to Do

DOH has declared a leptospirosis outbreak in Cagayan de Oro after a number of people showed symptoms of the waterborne disease. A few people have already died from it as well.

If you are a survivor of the flood and think you have been exposed to water contaminated with the leptospirosis bacteria, the best thing to do is visit the health centers and hospitals where doxycycline is being distributed for free.

This is important for people who are not living on the evacuation sites, because the distribution efforts and health campaigns will not be able to reach you easily.

Here is more on the topic.

Wikipedia explains more about leptospirosis.

Dec 31, 2011

Balai Global got a call this morning asking for assistance for food of the team working at the city tourism. These are the people working almost 24/7 since the tragedy happened. Friends, I hope you continue to send cash donations to Sr. Marge for food of the CAREGIVERS.

Last night our last stop was city central school, we finished almost 10:00pm, the DSWD team haven’t eaten any dinner yet because they will still go out and look for their food. This is a common situation among the CAREGIVERS. Yes, its their work and their mandate, but they are also human beings na napapagod at nagugutom din just like the flash flood survivors.

I hope the consciousness of private individuals who would like to help will include giving food to these CAREGIVERS. In that way, they will be able to carry on their tasks.

Balai Global continues to call for private individuals to go to centers near you and also share to the CAREGIVERS. Thanks to those who answered our call.

DILG City Director Rana expressed his gratitude over your generosity, bringing food for his policemen. These men are busy 24 hrs. loading and distributing relief goods all over the place.

As the year ends, we thank the Lord for giving us this opportunity to serve Him through our brothers and sisters here in CdO.

5 Thoughts Of A Balai Global Organizer

THOUGHTS:
1. Once again my heart is full because of the generosity of people:

—-our ink supplier, INK and TONER, lend us a big laser printer for FREE so that we may be able to produce documents and listing of evacuees.

—-PIDOT 1971 is our new caterer, owned by Hearty Malinao, who adjusted to our budget Php30.00/meal. but the portions are soooooo filling.  We emphasize to her that we do hard work thus we need energy food. You should taste their chicken WOW. At the start kasi we just cook food at home but we coudn’t cope anymore.

—-Maita’s family donated and we used it to give temporary shelter for around 27 families whose homes were totally washed out and even their family members

2. The needs of the victims are immediate but the response is delayed because proper documentation has to be done, which I don’t object. Thus at the moment private sectors fill-in the gaps.

3. Hopefully the proper mandated agencies today will take over with an organize system for installation para maparating na in an orderly manner the relief goods.

4. We need to be vigilant because some politicians are now using the evacuees for future votes in 2013.  Thus I received feedback that they won’t leave the area because they will not be given a relocation site. Each politician is promising a relocation site. Please maawa naman kayo, if you give please don’t think of 2013 yet .(I hope this is wrong feedback)

5. DSWD please take note that some victims are not being listed because the BRGY captain will not list them due to political alignment. We can pinpoint areas. Have talked to them and have seen their houses or the lot where it used to stand.
